There are some types of hosting situations that require additional approval from our students and their families. To secure these additional approvals, please talk to your Regional Field Specialist (RFS) and/or submit the appropriate request form (attached below) to him/her in cases where the student has not yet arrived in the U.S.
In addition, Sponsored Programs students may require additional special approvals. Read more in the Placing Sponsored Programs Students section.
You can learn more about finding students open to Non-traditional placements in the Find Students article.
Here are three scenarios that require additional approval:
Single Adult Placements
Single adults living by themselves with no one else in the home require the approval of the hosted student and his/her natural family through a signed consent form. We have many single adults who host every year. Single female adults can host male or female students, and single male adults can only host male students. The request form for single adult placements before student arrival is here.
A family who wishes to host two students at the same time requires the approval of both students and natural families. In addition, the students must not be from the same country or speak the same language. Approval is needed even if one student is through AFS and the other student is through a different program. Families can not host three or more students unless it is for a special short-term event.
Please note that the host family, both students, and both natural families of the students must sign the appropriate consent forms. The request form for double placements before students arrive in the U.S. is here.
Same-sex couples require approval from the hosted student and his/her natural family through a signed consent form. Many same-sex households host with AFS-USA each year. The request form for same sex placements before student arrival is here.
