The Liaison Training is one of three online trainings required before a volunteer can assume the role of Liaison for a student and host family. The three online training courses required for Liaisons are:
- AFS Basics (formerly known as the Hosting & Support Affiliations Training)
- State Department Certification
- Liaison Training
You can check your To Do list in your MyAFS Volunteer Portal to make sure that all required trainings are complete.
The Liaison Training is a course comprised of 3 modules that introduces new and returning Liaisons to the key roles and responsibilities of this critical volunteer position with AFS.
In order to satisfy AFS-USA's requirement for the Liaison Training, you must complete each of the three modules contained in the training and described below. This training should be completed in one of the following web browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.
Module 1 - Liaison Roles & Responsibilities
The first module in AFS-USA's Liaison Training introduces you to some of the key roles and responsibilities of an AFS Liaison.
Module 2 - Supporting Cultural Learning & Cultural Adjustment
The second module digs into the topics of Culture and Cultural Learning, while illustrating ways in which Liaisons can best support host families and participants in their journeys together.
Module 3 - Communication Strategies
The third module covers several topics involving communication techniques and strategies that should help Liaisons throughout the AFS exchange experience.
Note: All three modules described above are parts of the Liaison Training. The two other trainings (DoS and AFS Basics) are required for all volunteers who intend to work with students in any capacity, which includes liaisons.
