As an AFS volunteer, we want to ensure that you have the information and resources you need to successfully manage your volunteer role or task. In order to do this, AFS-USA developed a number of online training modules to help you in your role. These online training modules can be easily accessed here. These modules provide you with the tools you need to ensure that we provide a quality program experience for our students, families, schools, and program partners.
Although not all volunteer roles have online training requirements, all volunteers involved in the orientation and support of hosted participants and/or the recruitment, screening, orientation and support of host families, must complete the following online training modules:
These trainings provide you with the information you need to know about the U.S Department of State (DoS) regulations and CSIET standards, as well as AFS policies and procedures that help ensure the safety and well-being of our hosted students. These trainings should be completed in one of the following web browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge.
Online Training Requirements by AFS Volunteer Role
You can view the required and recommended trainings on the chart below or click here to download this as a pdf document.
Please note that the Department of State (DOS) Local Coordinator and the Hosting and Support Affiliations trainings are not required for the Area Team and Chapter Treasurer roles.
How will I be notified about required trainings?
If you are a new to volunteering with AFS-USA, and have decided to take on a specific volunteer role such as Host Family Interviewer, Liaison, etc., your Area Team Chair will direct you to the trainings you need to support you in your role.
If you are a current volunteer, you can view your trainings on MyAFS in the “To Do” widget. See screen shot below:
This enables you to see what training requirements are current, when they expire and need to be renewed, and a link to explore new online training modules to expand your knowledge and skills. In addition, you will receive reminders via email 30 days before any required trainings expire.
You can contact AskAFS (AskAFS@afsusa.org) or your Area Team Chair about any questions you may have about the available online training modules and volunteer training requirements at AFS-USA.
