Tools to Suspend Judgement Worksheet is a great guide to understanding some common tools to use with students, host families and volunteers to help them suspend judgement and deal with ambiguity when they are immersed in a different culture or just confronted with an unfamiliar situation that may cause them to jump to a conclusion.
DIVE exercises are great to do at an orientation with a group of students. Many of our hosted and study abroad students will have been introduced to the DIVE model in the AFS Student Learning Journey modules already.
Below are links to a volunteer worksheet and student worksheet that can be used to guide a DIVE activity.
- Volunteer Worksheet - volunteer should use this to guide students in the activity
- Student Worksheet - Provide students with a copy of this sheet so they can work through the activity and keep it with them to refer to later.
- Additional DIVE Image Samples and Explanations.
In addition, review the Power Of Observation Across Cultures activity and consider including it in an orientation with your students.
