Jointly funded and managed by the U.S. and German governments, the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program provides scholarships for German high school students to spend an academic year in the United States living with a host family, attending an American high school, and cultural immersion training to gain a better understanding of American culture, language, and everyday life.
Talking points for host family recruitment:
- Selection Process: Applicants are recruited and selected through a multi-step, merit-based, open competition. Academic performance, English language skills, and personal qualities are just a few of the factors considered for selection. As a final step in the process, candidates are interviewed and selected by the members of the German Bundestag (Federal Parliament).
- Cultural Background: Germans often have a deep appreciation for their cultural heritage, including literature, music, and traditions. CBYX participants tend to be very open to sharing their cultures and are eager to learn more about the U.S. This can contribute to a rich and diverse cultural exchange.
- CBYX vs. Core Participants: CBYX places a strong emphasis on civic engagement and fostering “youth ambassadors.” CBYX participants attend a week-long Civic Education Workshop in Washington, D.C., where they learn about American government, civic education and leadership skills development. At the community level, however, the CBYX students’ experience is much like that of any other AFS participant - they live with a host family and attend school, participate in local orientations, and use the same local support channels.
- Clusters and Enrichment Activities: CBYX participants are grouped into “clusters” with at least three other Department of State-sponsored students. These clusters provide enrichment activities that are organized for them throughout the program by dedicated volunteers. These activities focus on government, cultural diversity, and community service. All CBYX participants are required to complete a minimum of 3 enrichment activities during their year.
- Volunteer Hours: CBYX participants are required to complete 25 hours of community service during their time in the U.S.
- Academic Motivation: Germany places a strong emphasis on education and has a well-regarded educational system, emphasizing critical thinking skills. German students typically have high academic standards and a commitment to excellence in their studies and may be adept at analyzing information and engaging in thoughtful discussions.
