The Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Coordinator is a registered AFS volunteer working to advance D&I efforts within their AFS team, as well as the local community. The D&I Coordinator’s work will focus on a broad understanding of diversity and inclusion (all the ways that human beings are both similar and different).
Diversity outreach and inclusion efforts can include, but are not limited to, people of these varying backgrounds:
- Socioeconomic
- Ethnic and/or racial
- Religious
- Abilities
- Minority groups
- Sexual orientation
- Gender identity
- Age
- Political affiliation
Volunteer Commitment
- 10 to 20 hours a month
- Minimum one-year commitment
- Attend bi-monthly D&I Coordinator meetings, or additional meetings/trainings as necessary
Tasks
- Work with Area Team to include D&I in your team’s planning and goal setting
- Help to create awareness in the Area Team on AFS-USA’s D&I efforts
- Identify and connect with resources, groups, and/or organizations in your community that are working on D&I
- Consider implementing an Area Team scholarship with the goal of sending more diverse participants abroad
- Identify and/or develop events locally related to D&I, such as UNESCO’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development
- Collaborate with Area Team to incorporate D&I education into local trainings, orientations, etc.
