Starting in October 2019, an AFS-USA newsletter designed for educators was launched. The first edition was released to the educators that are in Global Link listed with the affiliation “educator”. The intention of the newsletter is to give educators access to resources that will inspire them to internationalize their curriculum, motivate their students to engage in study abroad and build a network of globally minded educators who will share best practices with each other.
The Global Educator newsletter will be sent approximately every 10-12 weeks and each edition is themed around one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For example, the January 2020 edition is themed around SDG #10: Reduced Inequalities in time for teachers to have resources to build their lessons for Black History Month in February. Each edition will include teaching resources that are relevant and tied to that time of the school year. It will also include an intercultural learning activity that will be versatile enough to allow teachers of most grade levels (including elementary and middle school ages) to utilize them with their students. There will be AFS scholarship information that can be shared with students and information about how AFS-USA can partner with them. Each edition is designed to be interactive. One example is here, where teachers were asked to paste their ideas to share lessons about black history month and/or educating students about reducing inequalities. Additionally, in every edition, it is our intention to feature an educator from around the country that is doing great global and intercultural things in the classroom…especially with the Sustainable Development Goals. If you have an educator that you would like to see highlighted or featured in an upcoming edition of The Global Educator, please reach out to Jill Woerner, Director of Educational Outreach, with a little bit about the teacher and the teacher’s contact information.
This newsletter is a fabulous tool to use when connecting with schools. Below you will find the previous editions that can be printed in a PDF form or can be downloaded and emailed as an attachment to an educator that you would like to help connect with AFS-USA. If there is something that is particularly relevant for an educator, you are encouraged to highlight that section or add a Post-It note to point it out before dropping this off or emailing it to an educator! You are encouraged to share this widely with educators as it has elements that are applicable to educators in a variety of roles and across many grade levels. Please share with your elementary and middle school educators as those environments are our pipeline of host families and future study abroad participants.
